Reading Resonse #1

Eddie is a smart kid, but he refuses to show his talent. He wants to be a juvenile delinquent. He skips school all the time and doesn't care where he might end up later in life. He meets a girl in a ballroom dancing class that he really begins to like. He used the phrase "Love at first site." Could this be the change to his ways?

A strong quote that I found in today's reading is "PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO GO AROUND TELLING LITtle kids to Just Say No to drugs because that could be dangerous. Besides, just Say No has to be oe of the lamest ideas ever invented in the first place and I bet it was invented by somebody white who has never has do sleep in the same bed with four other people who hardly don't ever take a shower because there wasn't anyplace else to sleep."

To me this passage makes me believe that he doesn't mind living where he does. He doesn't mind living around the selling and use of drugs. For him it is a way to survive. If he sells he can get money to support himself. Saying no can also get you killed where he lives at. He lost a friend due to him saying no and now he is against it. I will never understand what people who live in the projects must go through in everyday life, but this book really open my eyes to how hard they do have it.

Matched By Ally Condle

I have just began reading Matched two class periods ago. So far it is very intersting. A lot has taken place in just the first 30 pages. When the story opens up it is Cassia's 17th birthday. In the society that she is living in at the age of 17 you go to a matching banquet. It is not common for the matching banquet to fall on one's actual birthday, but for Cassia this is the case. Her bestfriend Xander is going to the banquet as well, just in case he is matched with a girl from another city.

When Cassia stands up for her match to be chosen the screen is black. Her match was in her own city hall. It turned out to be Xander. She was happy. She actually knew her match and was close to him.  She talks about how she dreams about Xander all the time. But on that day it was strange, she didn't dream of him making things feel a little different. She decided to visit her grandfather on her free day.

This is the part in the book that a powerful qoute stood out to me. The quote is: "...he told me the story a thousand times, how his mother had to help decide which poems to keep and which to lose forever. She used to sing him parts of the poems as lullabies. She whispered, sang them, he said, and I tried to remember them after she had gone. After she had gone. Tomorrow, my grandfather will go, too." I chose this quote because her grandfather is someone she loves and he is about to be 80 years old. Once everyone in the city turns that age ,the society decided it is time for them to go.

1. Basketball is basically my life. I live and breathe basketball. The gym is my second home.
